Bairei published many of his flower and (or) bird pictures in woodblock-printed books. The first of these books, published in 1881, was entitled Bairei Hyakuchō Gafu (i.e., Picture Album of One Hundred Birds by Bairei). Thirty-six pictures included in volume one of this book are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Typical of Japanese artists, Bairei paired birds with flowers or fruits in most pictures but unlike most printmakers of the time he used color sparingly (i.e., only shades of gray and reddish highlights).
